The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) is one of India’s largest infrastructure and industrial development programmes, designed to connect Delhi and Mumbai through a network of industrial zones, smart cities and high-speed freight infrastructure. Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat is one of DMIC’s flagship projects — this guide explains what DMIC actually is, its current status in 2026, and how it connects to Dholera.
What is the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor?
DMIC is a large-scale industrial development programme running approximately 1,483 km between Delhi and Mumbai, passing through six states: Delhi (NCR), Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The programme is built around the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) — a dedicated high-speed rail line for freight — with industrial nodes developed along a roughly 150 km band on either side of the corridor.
24 industrial nodes have been proposed under DMIC nationally, of which 6 mega nodes (four industrial areas and two investment regions) fall within Gujarat. Dholera Special Investment Region is one of these two investment regions.
2026 Update: Dedicated Freight Corridor Now Fully Operational
This is the most significant DMIC update as of 2026: both dedicated freight corridors underpinning DMIC are now complete and operational.
- Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) — approximately 1,506 km, connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (Maharashtra) to Dadri (Uttar Pradesh) — completed March 2026.
- Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) — connecting Ludhiana (Punjab) to Dankuni (West Bengal) — completed and fully operational since February 2024.
With both corridors now complete, freight movement along the DMIC route can run considerably faster than on conventional lines, which is one of the core infrastructure promises behind DMIC’s industrial nodes — including Dholera.
Key Features of DMIC
- Multi-Modal Connectivity: The completed freight corridors are supported by road networks, airports and ports to move goods efficiently across the route.
- Smart Cities: Several planned smart cities are being developed along the corridor, including Dholera SIR in Gujarat.
- Industrial Nodes and Investment Regions: Dedicated zones offering streamlined regulations and infrastructure to attract manufacturing investment.
- Focus Sectors: Nodes across DMIC are oriented toward electronics, engineering, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and other manufacturing sectors — see our guide to industrial plots and focus sectors in Dholera SIR for the sectors specifically targeted there.
Current Status of DMIC’s Flagship Nodes
According to NICDC, DMIC’s node development currently falls into a few stages:
- Developed nodes: Dholera Special Investment Region (Gujarat), Shendra-Bidkin Industrial Area (Maharashtra), Integrated Industrial Township Greater Noida, and Integrated Industrial Township Vikram Udyogpuri.
- Nodes nearing completion: including areas in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, plus logistics hubs in the Delhi-NCR region.
- Additional new projects: 12 further projects are at earlier stages of development under the broader National Industrial Corridor Development Programme.
Dholera’s Role Within DMIC
Dholera Special Investment Region is one of DMIC’s two designated investment regions in Gujarat and is often cited as DMIC’s most advanced flagship project. It is being developed as a large planned industrial and urban region, with:
- Industrial land and manufacturing zones targeting sectors like semiconductors, solar components and heavy engineering
- Planned residential development to support the workforce these industries will bring
- Commercial and business infrastructure to serve the growing population and industry
For a full picture of what’s planned across the region, see our Special Investment Region guide and Dholera SIR maps.
Why Does DMIC Matter for Investors and Businesses?
- Reduced Logistics Costs: A fully operational freight corridor lowers transit times and costs for manufacturers along the route.
- Planned Industrial Ecosystems: Rather than isolated factories, DMIC nodes are designed as integrated zones with utilities, roads and supporting infrastructure planned in advance.
- Investment and Employment: DMIC has attracted significant domestic and foreign investment interest, with industrial activity expected to create both direct and indirect employment across its nodes, including at Dholera.
None of this guarantees outcomes for any specific property or project — infrastructure progress supports the broader case for a region’s development, but individual investment decisions should still be based on the specific plot, its location, and independent due diligence.
What is the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor?
DMIC is a large industrial development programme connecting Delhi and Mumbai through a dedicated freight corridor and a series of planned industrial nodes and smart cities, including Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat.
Is the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) complete?
Yes, as of 2026 both the Eastern DFC (completed February 2024) and Western DFC (completed March 2026) are fully operational.
How is Dholera connected to DMIC?
Dholera Special Investment Region is one of DMIC’s two designated investment regions in Gujarat, and is frequently cited as one of the programme’s most advanced flagship projects.
How many industrial nodes are planned under DMIC?
24 industrial nodes have been proposed nationally under DMIC, with 6 mega nodes located in Gujarat.
Does DMIC guarantee returns for property investors near its nodes?
No. DMIC provides planned infrastructure and industrial development, which can support long-term demand in nearby regions, but it does not guarantee returns for any specific property. Location, legal status, and independent due diligence still matter for any individual purchase.
